Terra Bella Academy

Terra Bella Academy is a unique new learning collaborative overseen by the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Participating districts include Mountain View-Los Altos Joint Union School District, Palo Alto Unified School District, Mountain View-Whisman Elementary School District, and the Fremont Unified School District. The districts have collaborated to develop a unique learning experience for students in grades 8 through 12.

Incarcerated
Foster Youth



The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) has applied for funding to the California Department of Education to expand their Foster Youth Services (FYS) to provide support for foster youth incarcerated in county-operated juvenile detention facilities.

SCCOE will oversee the effort with a local advisory group to address the specific needs and services for foster youths in county-operated juvenile detention facilities through an existing entity, the Special Committee for the Education of Children in Juvenile Court, which is chaired by Santa Clara County Superior Court Justice Richard Loftus.

Use of School/Student
Data to Identify &
Support Those at
Risk of Failure



The San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD) is considering how to use the accumulated data sets (which are quite extensive) to identify students who may be most at-risk of school failure as early as possible in order to intervene effectively to keep them on track for graduation.

Funder'S Event

UWSV/AEC will host a briefing for the Northern California Grantmakers and potential funders in early December on the efforts underway to improve alternative education learning options and systems for out of school and struggling students in the greater San Jose area. The event will include panel presentations and site visits for an invited group of potential funders. More details to come. Lead people are Pearl Cheng and Maria Elena Riddle. NEWSFLASH

New AEC Personnel

New AEC personnel have been hired by UWSC recently and are underway! UWSV announced new staff hires in the Community Impact arena and confirms UWSV’s lead agency role for AEC. Pearl Cheng started in mid-September as the AEC Program Manager. She comes with extensive background and experience in education, public policy and high-tech, and has been a long-time resident of Santa Clara County. Pearl is transitioning with Maria-Elena Riddle who served wonderfully as the AEC facilitator. Maria-Elena will continue working with AEC as a consultant and researcher. Linh Hua joined UWSV in October as the AEC Administrative Assistant. She comes in after just graduating from law school and is an active community volunteer.

Grant Award Announcement

US Congressman Mike Honda notified UWSV that AEC’s application to the US Department of Health and Human Services for a $300,000 grant under the Communities Empowering Youth Program has been funded.

RESEARCH

“Listening to Student Voices: A Working Participatory Action Research Project”

The project intends to shed light on the students’ perspective on effective strategies for engaging Latina/Latino high school students as learners and in their pursuit of higher education.

Legislation Senate Bill 1170

The bill would have allowed charter schools that exclusively serve students eligible for community day school services to receive the higher ADA funds by tapping into unexpended county funds allocated by the State Legislature to serve these students. Another effort is planned.

AEC TEACHER PROGRAMS

Teacher Professional Development

A 120-hour course of study resulting in a Certification in Alternative Education is being developed for AEC teachers and will be offered by the UC Santa Cruz Extension Center in Silicon Valley as early as Spring Quarter 2007.
