Proposed Certificate in Alternate Education

The University of California Extension, Santa Cruz with campuses in Cupertino, Sunnyvale and Santa Cruz has proposed to offer a certificate in Alternative Education for teachers. Alternative education provides educational options to diverse student populations referred by local school districts, probation, and social services. In Santa Clara County alone nearly 20,000 children have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out of school (AEC report). Children who do not complete a high school education are at risk for delinquency, unplanned pregnancy, unemployment, poverty, substance abuse, serious illness and homelessness. Teachers in alternate education settings may be a child’s last link to a productive life. In addition, there is little recognition of or training for the special skills and expertise required to succeed with these children.

NEWSFLASH

Greetings from Pearl

On behalf of UWSV, the lead agency for the Alternative Education Collaborative (AEC), I am pleased to send you warm greetings for the new year. It is especially at this time of year that many of us take a retrospective view of our past and look toward the future. We ask such questions as: How have we done, and how can we do more? As a collaborative, the commitment and passion of those that work with and on behalf of out-of-school and struggling students throughout the county, is impressive. As someone at the helm for just 3 months, I have seen the passion at work and am proud of the resources, integrated programs, and the collaborative efforts.
